Photographer (1-year contract)

This position is part of an Ontario Job Creation Partnership Project (OJCP) and funded through OJCP.

Have Camera, Will Travel

Job Description

Calling all creative, outdoorsy types who won’t voluntarily go anywhere without a camera, and can’t get enough of campfires, hiking, swimming, canoeing, and meeting new folks in the great outdoors. We invite you to apply to spend up to one year in the Township of South Algonquin – adjacent to Algonquin Provincial Park - visually documenting our places, people and events during all seasons. Your mission, should you accept, is critical to the future of our business community and local economy.

The ideal candidate

  • Enjoys working independently – We’re your team. We’ll see you often, and we’ll be here when you need us but you are self-motivated to plan and execute every aspect of this project independently with a high degree of personal agency, quality and artistic flair

  • Loves a good story – We’ll help you see our community the way we do. Your job is to take what you see and turn it into a photo and video diary of our community in a way no one has previously attempted, producing a crazy number of stunning photographs and video from every angle.

  • Can be both Lark and Owl – You are as good at night shots of the moon, stars and milky way as you are with morning shots of dewy cobwebs or foxes at golden hour. You get to pick when you work.

  • Believes every problem is an opportunity – You intuitively experiment and tinker with locations, filming sequences, movements, composition and lighting, and with delicate instruments, such as, cameras, lenses, drones, and optical microscopes to produce out-of-this-world results.

  • Lives in the moment without being stuck in the moment – Because you are enormously flexible, and virtually unbothered by time, your knack for catching both momentary, fleeting images, and shots that take hours of waiting draws out the very best of every situation.

  • Interested in dabbling with a career as a professional photographer, photojournalist or influencer

  • And of course, you love managing digital images for post-processing and storage

  • If you’ve won any photo contests, can post to social media, or live in our region, that’s a bonus.

Candidate should have their own camera equipment. We can provide a modest transportation allowance and computer equipment/software if requested.

Details

35 hours per week for up to 52 weeks, with a high degree of autonomy and flexibility. Hours are roughly 60-70% photography and editing, 30-40% upskilling and job searching.

  • The successful candidate must meet the OJCP criteria: be a resident of Ontario, unemployed, legally authorized to work in Canada, and meet at least 1 of the following criteria:

    • have an active employment insurance (EI) claim

    • have an EI benefit period that ended within the past 5 years

    • have paid employee premiums in at least three of the previous 10 years (where earnings have been at least $2,000 in each of those years)

    • received the employment insurance emergency response benefit within the previous 60 months
